Mr. Melta Exclusive Interview

First off we just want to say thanks for taking the time out to do this interview for us at Monsta Musik.

No worries, thanks for the interview!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you have released?

My name is Mr Melta, im a Cambridge based Hip Hop, Grime and Drum and Bass artist. So far i have released Meltdown Vol 1, an E.P/ Mixtape in 2009, Light Em Up, another E.P, in 2011, and most recently Meltdown Vol 2, in conjunction with UK Runnings, and hosted by Tricksta. Big up Tricksta man, hes helped me a lot.

A lot of independent artists now run their own labels. Do you think this is the way forward? Or do you hope one day to get signed to a major or another label?

To be honest, im not really interested in the buisness side of things to much at the moment, im trying to make my name as an artist first, and then i may look in to that side of things, because i think you have a lot more control over everything than on a major label. At this stage though i would definatley be interested in talking to labels, not neccesarily major, but one that appreciates what im doing, and doesnt want to change me and my music.

Formats of music are changing all the time, but if we asked you CD or MP3 which would you say is better and why?

I think MP3s now, the main reason being the price differences between the two. Putting out music on MP3 is very cost effective if you have a small budget. Its also a very good way to get your music heard by a lot of people on Soundcloud etc. However, i do love the artwork and everything you get with CD’s. I definatley will be releasing stuff on CD though, its a physical object. If your I pod or computer dies, thats your mp3s gone!

Are you releasing your music on CD or MP3 and how are you finding the different formats?

So far ive only released my music on MP3,so i cant really compare the two. but MP3s have worked for me so far, being a new artist. Ive only ever done free downloads, so i guess when i start charging we will see!

Apart from the genre of music that you make what else do you listen to?

I love all sorts, Garage, Drum and Bass, Reggae,Jungle, bit of dubstep, anything thats good really, i love old soul, old rock, ska, all sorts!

Is there any music that you hate and just cant listen too?

Im not a fan of Gabba, and Breakcore, the really mad, broken up kinds of rave music. Im also not a fan of Death Metal. Not a fan of the screaming! That said though, i can always appreciate good music. I may just not like it!

So lets talk about how people can support you. Do you have music out there people can buy?

Ive got 3 free download projects, Meltdown Vol 1, Light Em Up, and Meltdown Vol 2, all available for free at and you can check my freestyles on You Tube

Do you have any merchandise for sale yet, or do you do anything in the industry that you want to talk about?

I dont have any Merchandise or anything like that, just check the music and videos!

If there was a position of power that was world leader and you was chose as the person to fill that position, what laws or things would you change and why?

Wow! I dont know if im the man for that job!I guess id make everyone stop killing each other, that would definatley be a start. Id relax drug laws to, id legalize weed, i think thats a fairly pointless one, id probably change up the sentences for certain crimes. Id also make everyone earning over a certain amount donate a percentage to charity, either in their country or others who needed it. I do think there should be a tax on the mega rich. No one needs all that mad amounts of cash. Most people arent going to see a fraction of that in their lifetime.

People are saying that live shows are the way forward for acts to earn money, but then we hear its hard to get bookings? Whats your take on this?

I think there is truth in that, but it depends where you are, if you can travel, and if you already have a fan base. The High Focus lot must make a fortune of touring and shows, theyre always about! I reckon it probably is more lucrative than selling music. But if you never release any music, no ones going to come to your shows! Its swings and round abouts!

Who is or was the best musician in the world and why?

The best musician, shit i reckon Jimi Hendrix is a contender. No one before or since has made music like that guy! But i would definatley say that there is no one best. There are so, so many amazing musicians, alive, dead, and still to be born!

So what does the future hold for you?

More music! Ive got a few things in the pipeline, an e.p coming with a Cambridge producer, Remulack, another project with my boy Stirleng, im just kind of trying to figure out my next moves really. Its always like that when i finsh a project, i float around for a bit just gathering beats and ideas, then jump in to another project! Theres going to be a lot more videos coming, and ive got a festival to do at the end of September, Mischief festival, Phi Life Cypher are there, so im looking forward to that, more Drum and Bass bookings, im going to keep doing Warning in Cambridge when i can, i still love spitting to Drum and Bass.

Once again thanks for your time. Anyone you want to shout out or anything you want to add before you go?

No worries, you got some good questions! Shout all the Cambridge team, my guys, Stirleng, Offcut, Zed-i, Slang,Mistah Biggz, Dillah, Dubble G, Jimmy Danger, Simbad Fresh, Rhyme pad Radio, especially Stakka and Seedyman, Unsigned Global Music Network, Sue Bryant, Paul Sargent, Martin Goodman, Tricksta, of course, B-Illa TV, UV UK, and everyone else helping and supporting me!

OBSG- Guns x Gold (ALBUM)

Guns: the weapons of choice for modern-day warriors with both violent and valiant agendas.

Gold: a precious, malleable metal symbolizing power, strength and wealth and associated with the wisdom of aging and fruition.

The New York City-based collective, Okami.Bead.Slang.Gang. (O.B.S.G.), drops their highly anticipated album, “Guns x Gold”. Hosted by The Find Mag, “Guns x Gold” features tracks such as “Moonwalk” and “Dirty Dishes”. OBSG’s debut album confronts listeners with a smooth and ambient neo hip hop sound laced with poisonous, gritty & no-rules-barred lyrics from Rodney Hazard, Duane “Raisin” Douglas and Jimmie “Pop” Thomas.

UK Runnings Present Mistah Biggz ‘That’s Mistah’ & Dillah ‘Natural Born Dillah’

The brothers in bars are back with two brand new releases that any discerning Hip-Hop fan will adore. Mistah Biggz and Dillah a.k.a B-iLLA have been setting the scene alight with a string of superb videos and freestyles for various on-line broadcasters, live dates across the UK, some brilliant reviews as well as the birth of their own event ‘Rap In Da Box’. Now the two brothers both give up two brilliant solo mixtapes as part of a double release mixtape project that also acts like a B-iLLA double CD!

Their quest in music is focussed with a hard work ethic that has recently led to them re-launching their own channel B-ILLA TV which has been set up not only to promote themselves but local artists in their hometown of Cambridge and other credible artists from the urban music scene. From strength to strength, B-iLLA are definitely a force to be reckoned with. They are already working on a full length follow up to the well received ‘Brothers In Bars’ as well as an EP with London producer Jay Flames.

UK Runnings Presents Mr. Melta – Meltdown Volume 2 (Review)

More quality home-grown action from the UK’s leading mixtape series UK Runnings, this time it’s Mr Melta that takes to the stage with an array of good solid songs. There’s enough diversity here in the beat selection, although I do think he sounds better on the more Hip-Hop styled grooves that the grime. It’s a well presented mixtape and Tricksta kills it on the hosting as normal. This is a big release.
