Best of 2009 with DJ Cheeba, Boom Monk Ben, Ruckus Roboticus and DJ Moneyshot

Solid Steel in association with Serato (25th December) review of 2009 looking back at the most popular mixes by the ‘nu skool’ Solid Steel residents, as voted by you the listeners.

‘In no particular order’, we kick off with DJ Cheeba and the audio part of his mix from September. Music from the Beastie Boys, Roots Manuva, Thunderheist and even Yo Gabba Gabba.

Boom Monk Ben got most votes for his November mix featuring bass heavy tracks from Starkey, Bassnectar, Rusko and the huge Joy Orbison, plus a cheeky bootleg of Dead Prez and retro edits of James Brown and Fats Waller.

You liked the Ruckus Roboticus mix from May which included his own excellent remix of Pase Rock, along with Chico Mann, Flying Lotus and Caetano Veloso.

It was DJ Moneyshot’s “Check Your Head” mix that stood out for you from his many fine contributions. Taking all the original beats from the classic Beastie Boys album he loops, re-edits and layers them into a mind-blowing odyssey, with Barrington Levy, Dr. John and The Fearless Four all featuring.

YAEO – Tomahawk Tape -The Prequel

For those heads who are eagerly awaiting the release of YAEO’s ‘Tomahawk Tape’ in early 2010 sturbanclothing.com and mohawkgang.com have got the piff to get you through these cold months, 8 Tracks of heat for Free, all hosted by New York’s finest DJ DELZ! Thats right YAEO’s been growing a beard, working with one of the hottest DJ’s in the game, drinking some straight cognac and spending time in the Lab making that unique sounding Hip-Hop for our listening pleasure.

‘Before Tha Tomahawk Tape’ is the warm up to YAEO’s highly anticipated ‘Tomahawk Tape`…..and…. just like on the ‘Tomahawk Tape’ all beats are exclusive apart from the ‘New York Minute’ Remix by YAEO and WORDSMITH, (two of the most talked about UK rappers), which is a track that both artists shine on and Yes that is also included on the ‘Before Tha Tomahawk Tape’. If you haven’t checked that yet, go and knock yourself out now because the video is a must see.

Don’t get it wrong though this isn’t just some pick a beat, spit and dump it on the internet tape. YAEO has approached this project with a lot of integrity, he deals with issues that his name is surrounded by, but he doesn’t get overly caught up in them. Theres hard and straight battle sh*t, real heart felt tracks, and of course that original YAEO MohawkGang piff.

What other selling points are there…well there are none since this is strictly for the fans for FREE. Highlights there is plenty of HIGHLIGHTS :

Fly53 Birthday Bash

Friday 18th December at Scrutton St. Warehouse, 73-75 Scrutton Street, London EC2A 4PJ.

GALLOWS
Lovvers
Male Bonding
Rolo Tomassi (DJ set)

Lock up your daughters and batten down the hatches, because FLY53 are coming to London to celebrate our fifteenth year of life, and to see out 2009 like only we can. FLY have teamed up with Vice magazine and Sailor Jerry to create THE party of 2009. To ensure that you wake up feeling like roadkill, we have drafted in GALLOWS, LOVVERS and MALE BONDING to tear up the stage. Holding the ship steady all night will be a DJ sets by Rolo Tomassi, Sexbeat, Holy Roar, The A-Team, Jonathan Rockwell and Laurent Bernard (from Gallows)

Just in case your minds and souls have been poisoned by the unforgivable reality music shows to the point where you have not heard of these acts, heres the 411….

GALLOWS
The five piece from Watford have this year released their second album ‘Grey Britain’ which has been receiving high scores from the people who ‘decide’ what music is good, and is a further kick to the balls of the ‘Punk Purists’ waiting to tear this band down. Bring your fists and meet us in the pit because their set is going to hit harder than Chuck Norris’s roundhouse kick.

MALE BONDING
Male Bonding epitomize what it is to be a DIY musician by releasing their material through their own label Paradise Vendors Inc. they join the growing number of talent not defined by major music labels. Male Bonding was a former (pre) name for the legendary Sonic Youth, themselves champions of a DIY scene that generated the sound of rock emerging in 80’s New York.

The combination of Grunge/Tropical/Surf music understates the energy that their music generates live so maybe leave the board shorts and Hawaiian shirts at home.

LOVVERS
Lovvers are pop-punk, devoid of cheesiness and studio polish, something all too familiar with the genre. The band are plainly loud! Their albums sound like the band have recorded in one room, live with the amps at Spinal Tap level and the engineer tied up in the control room.

FLY53
Born in the mid 90s from a limited series t-shirt collection, FLY53 has grown into one of the most innovative street fashion labels in the UK. Fly53 produces the very best wearable and original garments. Staying true to its heritage, the brand continues to collaborate with musicians and artists, injecting integrity, creativity and quality into an increasingly bland corporate market.
